'X-Men: Days of Future Past - Rogue Cut' release date announced for home media

X-Men Days of Future Past - Rogue Cut 20th Century Fox

"X-Men: Days of Future Past" was one of the most critically acclaimed comic book films of 2014 but director Bryan Singer had to cut out a lot of footage surrounding Anna Paquin's character, Rogue. As such, a new alternate version of the film, "Rogue Cut," will be released for home media this July 14.

Singer officially announced via Twitter the release date for "Rogue Cut," stating that it will be available on DVD, Blu-Ray, and digital HD. With the announcement is a photo depicting Rogue using Kitty Pryde's power to send Wolverine back to the 1970s.

Last year, screenwriter Simon Kinberg told Empire that there was a whole subplot surrounding Rogue but it was cut out while the movie was being edited. The final theatrical version no longer features these scenes and Rogue is only shown at the very end of the film.

According to Kinberg, as re-stated by Screen Rant, the subplot involves the future versions of Xavier and Lehnsherr rescuing Rogue from an internment camp after the scene where Wolverine slashes Kitty Pryde. Rogue would then absorb Kitty Pryde's power and then take over to keep Wolverine's consciousness in his past body.

According to the report, Singer wanted this subplot because it would give the future characters more to do than to just wait for Wolverine to succeed. However, the subplot was dropped because Singer figured it did nothing to advance the main story and that it might reduce the tension that the film was building on.

To remedy this, new scenes were shot to keep Kitty Pryde doing her job despite her wounds.

The extended cut offers 17 additional minutes, with 10 minutes dedicated to the Rogue subplot while the remaining 7 minutes are given to other deleted scenes. While the DVD and Blu-Ray versions will be available for retail on July 14, the Digital HD version is available for pre-order at the official Fox website.
