"Witches of East End" was cancelled due to declining ratings during its second season, but that hasn't stopped its fans from launching a petition campaign to get the show renewed for season 3. However, the very active petition may have been for naught as one of the lead stars has signed on for a new project.
According to a report from TheWrap, lead actress Julia Ormond has been cast for the espionage-thriller series by SyFy, "Incorporated." She will be joining Sean Teale, Georgina Haig, and Eddie Ramos. "Incorporated" is being produced by Ben Affleck and Matt Damon's company, Pearl Street Productions, alongside Universal Cable and CBS Television.
This is good news for Ormond, as the industry has evolved to a point where it is difficult for even established stars to get projects. However, without its lead actress, there is very little chance that "Witches of East End" may push forward. Following Ormond's departure, it is only a matter of time that the other stars will pick up new projects as well.
The petition did manage to garner over 149,000 signatures by July and since Aug. 1, this has risen to 195,000 signatures. According to Enstarz, this amounts to over 13,000 signatures per week since the petition launched. The #RenewWitchesofEastEnd campaign became viral via Twitter and fans have even campaigned for Netflix to pick up the show.
The list of people who signed even include celebrities such as Channing Tatum, William Shatner, and other cult sci-fi/ action stars such as Sarah Michelle Gellar from "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" and both Shannen Doherty and Holly Marie Combs who starred in "Charmed."
"Witches of East End," a series based on the novel by Melissa de la Cruz, managed to garner an average of 1.67 million viewers for its first season but this dropped to 1.13 million viewers during the second season, prompting the Lifetime network to drop the show.
