What time is the Blood Moon lunar eclipse tonight?

Tonight's total lunar eclipse will take place after midnight, beginning at about 2 a.m. ET on Tuesday, April 15. The eclipse is set to peak between 3.07 a.m. and 4.25 a.m. ET on the East Coast, according to NAS. The eclipse is set to last for almost six hours, beginning 12.53 a.m. to 6.37 a.m. ET.

April's lunar eclipse will be the first of four 'blood moons' tetrad. which will take place between 2014-2015. Other lunar eclipse dates are: Oct. 8, 2014, Apr. 4, 2015, and Sept. 28, 2015.

Along with tonight's total eclipse, another astronomical event will be the Opposition of Mars, which will see Earth at its closest distance to our neighbor planet. Mars will appear to look like a bright shining star next to tonight's moon.

A lunar eclipse happens when Earth, the sun and the moon align in a way that makes Earth's shadow falls on the moon, thus giving the moon a dark 'blood' color.

The lunar eclipse will be visible across the whole country.

For those who can't go out to watch the rare lunar eclipse, NASA will be live streaming the total lunar eclipse here. The eclipse can also be seen via the Slooh Camera.
