Welsh language Bible joins Rome collection

The Archbishop of Wales has donated a Welsh Bible to a Christian community in Rome.

The Bible was presented to the Sant'Egidio community in Rome on Wednesday by the British Ambassador to the Holy See, Nigel Baker.

The gifted Bible is the 1988 translation, Y Beibl Cymraeg Newydd, the New Welsh Bible.

It is the successor of the first translation of the Bible into Welsh, published in 1588 and revised in 1620.

The copy will be put on display at the "Altar of the Bibles" in the community's chapel.

The Altar of the Bibles is home to copies of the Bible from around the world in various languages.

The Archbishop of Wales, Dr Barry Morgan, donated a Welsh Bible to the collection in response to an appeal for a copy made through the Ambassador's blog.

Speaking at the presentation ceremony, Mr Baker said the donation of the Welsh Bible was "recognition of the importance of the Welsh language and culture".

He also paid tribute to the "extraordinary work" of Sant’ Egidio across the world.
