Want to be Promoted in Your Job? Here's What You Should Do

We all want to be promoted to a better place in our lives. In our careers, we often desire to be given a better position, one that handsomely rewards our efforts and gives us a sense of fulfilment. We all want to have that.

Without knowing what we need to do in order to be promoted, however, we all remain in the wanting stage. We don't get promoted by chance. One thing we must keep in mind is that promotion comes from the Lord – He is the One who puts down and exalts (see Psalm 75:6-7).

Do you want to be promoted? Here are some things you should do.

1. Be Faithful in the Little Things

It's but common sense to realise that if we're not trustworthy with the small things, we won't be trustworthy with the bigger things. Anyone who wants to be a manager, supervisor, or team leader must first be a good worker so that he would know how to help others do well in their tasks.

The Lord Jesus clearly explained this in Luke 16:10. He said, "If you are faithful in little things, you will be faithful in large ones. But if you are dishonest in little things, you won't be honest with greater responsibilities."

2. Excel in Whatever Field You're Assigned To

Also, we shouldn't expect poor performance to be rewarded handsomely. Sloppy work means sloppy returns. Have you ever noticed that only the skilled and those who have honed their craft are able to specialise? It's but biblical truth.

"Do you see a man who excels in his work? He will stand before kings; He will not stand before unknown men." (Proverbs 22:29)

3. Be Humble

Lastly, we should always remember that character is part of the requirements for promotion. We might be skilled or good with the little things, but if our character raises red flags, promotion might stay far away from us.

Arrogance, unteachability, and a proud spirit will always cause God to act against, not in support of. Proverbs 3:34 says "The Lord mocks the mockers but is gracious to the humble." We better take this seriously. After all, God is the One who promotes and demotes.

A Bonus

As a bonus reminder, keep in mind that while promotions often offer good compensation, the amount of reward money must never be the sole reason why we must desire and pray for it. We must see that promotions bring with it a higher level of influence, and thus a wider reach in terms of relationships with people. Let's see promotions as a way to get a bigger audience to whom we can share the goodness of God.

"A good name is to be chosen rather than great riches, Loving favor rather than silver and gold." (Proverbs 22:1)
