'Vampire Diaries' season 7 spoilers: Lily Salvatore to wreak havoc in Mystic Falls

Anna Wersching as Lily

The Salvatore matriarch will hang around and, in all probability, will cause some bloodcurdling turmoil in "The Vampire Diaries" season 7. The character portrayed by Annie Wersching was recently confirmed to return to the series, with a promise that a "major" storyline involving her character will unfold.

The Wrap says that Lily Salvatore will play a big role in the new season by bringing her sons a heavy dose of superhuman-related mayhem. In the previous season of the hit supernatural series, Lily joined up with her vampire friends that possess witch powers — a lethal combination, indeed — which smelled strongly of brewing major trouble.

It was long rumored that Mama Salvatore will be the biggest threat to Damon and Stefan in "The Vampire Diaries" season 7. As the brothers reel away from Elena's horrible fate, with Damon reverting to his old, dark ways in the process, they have to get ready for Lily's posse of dangerous and hungry friends as well.

This may just be what executive producer Caroline Dries was talking about. The family matter will be a great opportunity for Stefan to step up and become a hero. With Damon still consumed and overwhelmed by his loss, the new season will flesh out his brother even more by showing his heroic makings.

"I'm really excited to see Stefan come into his own and he'll really take to the role of a hero, which will be really cool," Dries told E! Online. "He's always been a hero but I think in a broader sense he'll become more heroic next season."

"The Vampire Diaries" season 7 will premiere in October. It will be the first season that actress Nina Dobrev will not be included in the pack. Kai cursed her character into a deep slumber and intertwined her fate with Bonnie, making Elena sleep until Bonnie dies.
