Rumors of a second season for HBO's successful True Detective series are rife.

True Detective season 1 saw lead actors in Matthew McConaughey in a mesmerizing role as Rustin Cohle and Woody Harrelson as Marty Hart. The first season also saw cast members Michael Potts, Michelle Monaghan and Tory Kittles.

The season 1 finale of the hit HBO series in March had drawn in so much traffic that the HBO streaming site crashed as viewers logged on to find out the true identity of "The Yellow King."

The sequel of the crime drama will not see the return of Oscar winner Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson.

However, fans may get to see actor Brad Pitt in the upcoming sequel, as casting rumors swirl that HBO has tapped him for a lead role. He may be starring alongside a female lead, who is rumored to be one of the lead detectives in the second series.

Creator Nic Pizzolatto, who is currently penning the script for the second season, prevoiusly told HitFix: "Okay. This is really early, but I'll tell you (it's about) hard women, bad men and the secret occult history of the United States transportation system."

When asked if any of the reaction to the season 1 ending informed him of what he will do next in season 2, he said, "It's informed exactly one thing. It's that I realize I need to keep being strange. Don't play the next one straight."

Pizzolatto gave an update on season 2 in an interview with Entertainment Weekly. "I was well on my way in the writing but there's been a lot noise and work around the end of the first season that got in the way.
