'Tom Clancy's The Division' update: new details emerge, what to expect

When "Tom Clancy's The Division" was announced, game publisher Ubisoft said that this massive undertaking is sure to bring a new level of gameplay and design experience for both hardcore fans of the genre and casual shooters alike. Indeed, this seems to be the case as Ubisoft has already indicated that due to the size of the game, four studios are tasked to complete the title. 

Since the days are already drawing down to the title's launch, the company has released new details about the upcoming shooter. In the form of a Q&A, lead economic designer Andrada Greciuc laid out some of the particulars that gamers would be interested to know. 

One of the game's most notable features in terms of design is Ubisoft's use of what they call the Snowdrop engine. The engine adds a realistic look and feel to the game, right down to the small details like shadows and lighting, and also to game interactions such as opening and closing a door or exploring the city's rubble. 

As for gameplay, Greciuc discussed game features that would be introduced such as the new loot and reward system. For instance, the structure of the drop items is such that rare and common items are marked accordingly.

"The orange ones you see was the highest rarity and it was very flashy so you notice it. We make sure that when you get a good item, you don't overlook it," Greciuc explained. "The lower rarity items are also marked, you should be able to find them as well, they're just not as flashy. Also, not all kills grant loot, so that's why you didn't see [a notification] after each kill." 

"Tom Clancy's The Division" is scheduled to be released early next year.
