'Tokyo Ghoul' season 3 rumor: Installment cancelled, to be replaced by 'Tokyo Ghoul: Re?'

 Funimation

While fans eagerly await the return of "Tokyo Ghouls" for another season run, it is rumored that instead of a continuation from where season 2 left off, fans will see a sort of reboot instead, with the franchise's "Tokyo Ghoul: Re" being adapted into an anime season.

According to YouthHealthMag, a significant number of fans were disappointed how the previous season of "Tokyo Ghoul" turned out and petitioned for the series to have a fresh start instead.

Season 2 of "Tokyo Ghoul," while maintaining a loose premise from the original manga adaptation, diverted from the story many times, frustrating the hardcore fans who are familiar with the arcs and plots of the original adaptation.

The industry follower added that the clamor went on to become an official petition by the fans. On its now-defunct petition page, fans mentioned that "Tokyo Ghouls" started off great as it mirrored the events in the manga. However, the petition page reportedly stated, "We have a manga that is on par with 'Death Note' when it comes to its complexity and psychological theme and it gets that sorry adaptation from Studio Pierrot. Not only did they butcher the plot, they also ruined the characters and their development."

Crossmap said that while FUNimation Entertainment CEO Gen Fukunaga already teased the continuation of the "Tokyo Ghoul" anime adaptation in winter, the CEO stopped short of revealing much about how the new show will turn out. This led to rumors stating that instead of continuing with a third season, the season 2 backlash will have the studio create an entirely new run for the franchise, using "Tokyo Ghoul: Re" as its plot. This will make the new season stay true to its roots but also give fans a new and fresh story.

"Tokyo Ghoul: Re" is an ongoing sequel to the original "Tokyo Ghoul" manga.
