'Vampire Diaries' season 7B: Matt to die?

The Vampire Diaries The CW

One of the newest gimmicks of "The Vampire Diaries" season 7 is that it features events from both the current time period as well as snippets from a three-year time jump. However, Matt (Zach Roerig) has been missing from the future segments and according to a report from Melty, this may indicate he will be killed off soon.

Matt is notable for being the only remaining pure human in a series filled by vampires. He has gone through several near-death situations in the past but his notable absence in the future segments indicate he may no longer be alive to be there in the first place.

His absence is even more notable when even the other side characters and all of the main characters, save for Elena (Nina Dobrev) since she is currently asleep in her coffin, have made an appearance in the future events.

Melty also cites executive producer Caroline Dries who addressed Matt's absence in an interview with Entertainment Weekly back in December.

"We haven't seen Matt in a flash forward," Dries stated, "and I don't know if that's a good thing."

While not confirmed, it is heavy speculated by fans that Matt's fate may be tied to the huntress Rayna (Leslie-Ann Huff), who is chasing down Stefan (Paul Wesley). While Stefan and his brother are trying to escape the Phoenix Stone and the huntress it is possible that Matt will get caught in between and suffer for it.

The report also points out that Rayna's past will be shown in season 7B and will reveal how and why she is how she is in the future segments. It is possible that she is guilty for Matt's death although at this point this should still be considered as pure speculation.

"The Vampire Diaries" season 7 episode 10, "Hell is Other People," will officially kick off the back-end of the season and is set to air on Jan. 29.
