Video game movies have a reputation for being really bad, although it does appear that these adaptations will get better if the upcoming "Warcraft" and "Assassin's Creed" films turn out to be successful. Another film adaptation fans have been looking forward to is the adaptation of "The Last of Us," but according to the developers, the film is now in development hell.
While speaking to IGN, "The Last of Us" director Neil Druckmann confirmed that nothing much has taken place in regards to the film's development. There has been no movement to get a director, cast and studio behind the project ever since they conducted a table read of the finished script.
"I know I said in an interview a while back we had a table read, got the script to a good place and it kind of entered development hell like these things tend to do," Druckmann explained in the interview. "There hasn't been any work done on it in over a year and a half."
Unfortunately, this might mean the film may not move forward for a long while, at least until video game movies become more a viable business. This will depend on whether or not "Warcraft" and "Assassin's Creed" become box-office hits. If they do, film studios may become more interested and pick up "The Last of Us" for production.
In regards to their other film project, an adaptation of "Uncharted," Druckmann confirmed that Sony Pictures is working on the film and that the last detail known is Sony hiring a new screenwriter. Other than that, the studios have kept Naughty Dog involved but only in small doses to check if the film is keeping in line with the original games.
"The Last of Us" has no current release date but the aforementioned "Uncharted" film is slated to be released on June 30, 2017.
