'The Last of Us 2' release date, speculations: Sequel set for a June 2018 launch?

Naughty Dog will release the long-awaited video game, "The Last of Us 2," during the fifth year anniversary of the first if the latest reports are anything to go by.

There has been no update about the highly anticipated sequel ever since Naughty Dog creative director Neil Druckmann spoke about it early this year.

However, Digital Spy surmises that "The Last of Us 2" will see the light of day in June 2018, which is exactly five years after the release of the award-winning original.

The site also says the action-adventure survival horror game being cancelled is unlikely. Just looking at its success (the game was deemed one of the greatest games of all time), the creation of a follow-up, "The Last of Us 2," was a no-brainer.

Druckmann said last year that he and game director Bruce Straley were already throwing some ideas about "The Last of Us 2," but the development was halted when they were recruited for "Uncharted 4: A Thief's End."

In April, he told GamesRadar that they will be back to work on the sequel after the release of long-awaited single-player downloadable content (DLC) for "Uncharted 4."

"Before my partner, Bruce and I, my directing partner, came on to Uncharted 4 we were working on prototypes for different ideas within The Last of Us universe ... All those things were left on hold when we had to come onto Uncharted 4 to direct the project," Druckmann said.

"Our next focus is the single player DLC and then, once we have enough resources, resurrect all those prototypes, see where we're at, see where the teams at, what they're excited for and go from there," he went on to say.

This suggests that "The Last of Us 2" is in the works, although, at the moment, there is no telling where Naughty Dog is at in the development.

The "Uncharted 4" single-player DLC is expected to be released this December at the PlayStation Experience (PSX 2016), which means that the studio will soon give their full attention to "The Last of Us 2" if they have not already done so.
