During the Disney Investor's Meeting held last Tuesday, Disney President Bob Iger confirmed that a sequel to the 2004 animated film "The Incredibles" is in the pipeline for future production.
This was followed by Pixar's Twitter post, stating, "Its official, we're currently working on new films featuring your favorite characters from The Incredibles and Cars!"
Brad Bird, who wrote and directed the Academy-winning original, was confirmed to be penning the sequel as well. Bird was initially hesitant to work on the sequel and fans have long considered the possibility of a follow-up long dead.
"Pixar does not look at sequels as a financial plan," he stated during the 2007 Wondercon as cited by SlashFilm. "If I can come up with a story that is as good or better than that first film, then I'd love to return to that world, but it would have to be story first."
While the film has officially been confirmed, no release date has been given by Disney representatives.
Along with the announcement of "The Incredibles 2" was the confirmation that Disney/Pixar is planning on "Cars 3." At the moment, the company is working on three other animated features: "Finding Dory," which serves as a sequel to "Finding Nemo," "The Good Dinosaur," and "Inside Out."
According to Latin Post, "Incredibles 2" may focus on Jack-Jack, who was a baby in the first film. Since more than a decade has passed between the two films, the sequel may feature a teenage Jack-Jack as he tries to deal with his family of heroes and his multiple super-powers.
Digital Spy, on the other hand, says Pixar also has plans of re-releasing the first film, along with "Ratatouille," in 3D. This would be a perfect opportunity for younger kids to experience the film for the first time right before the sequel is released in theaters.
