The Tampa Bay Buccaneers look to be the second team in the NFL after the Dallas Cowboy to use virtual reality technology to help develop their quarterbacks especially 2015 No. 1 pick Jameis Winston.
"It might be good for Jameis. He is a film junkie. We have looked into that," Bucs offensive coordinator Dirk Koetter told FOX Sports.
In a report by ESPN, former Stanford kicker Derek Belch developed the program which has been already used by a number of collegiate football programs including Arkansas, Auburn, Clemson, Stanford and Vanderbilt.
The Cowboys recently struck a deal with StriVR Labs which was a virtual-reality company that uses 3-D technology giving the players a 360-degree view of the plays.
The quarterbacks, linebackers and safeties will be in a room and will wear a virtual-reality headset which will allow them a full view of the play.
It will give coaches an easier job as they will be able to check if the players using the headset seeing a 360-degree view of the play makes the right reads or checks.
It is also very useful for backups as they will be able to experience and have the same view as the ones involved in the play even if they are not participating in it.
"What I tell vendors that come in to show us stuff is that we need it today. Some people tell us, 'This will be ready in three months. I say, 'No, Jameis needs this tomorrow,'" Koetter also told Fox Sports.
But for now Winston is doing extra work the old school way as Fox Sports reported.
The 21-year-old is on the field with Bucs quarterbacks coach Mike Bajakian reviewing plays while a member of the equipment staff catches his passes.
"I visualize the concept and go through my reads with no one out there. I haven't done any virtual things. I know the Cowboys have got it," Winston told Fox Sports.
