'Street Fighter 5': new core mechanics for characters

Ryu vs Chun-Li in Street Fighter 5 Capcom

Game company Capcom built "Street Fighter 5" with all-inclusive gameplay improvements in mind, as it did in the previous numbered installments in the franchise. In the 2D fighter, players will see new core mechanics in the form of V-Skills and V-Triggers.

Each character in the roster has their own personal V-Skill and V-Trigger abilities that no other character possesses. Players can easily put these into action by simultaneously pressing two medium buttons for the former and two heavy buttons for the latter.

The V-skills and V-triggers work in almost the same way as the parry attacks first seen in "Street Fighter 3" but the elimination of the focus attacks, pioneered in "Street Fighter 4," has a striking impact (both positively and negatively) on the game as well.

The difference between V-skills and V-triggers is not very clear but Escapist Magazine explains that the skills are more of a comeback mechanic while the triggers are merely buffs for attacks, with the site adding that Nash's and Bison's, which allow teleports, are handled differently.

In every character reveal trailer for "Street Fighter 5," Capcom makes sure it showcases how each fighter's V-skills and V-triggers work. The latest additions to the roster, Cammy and Birdie, showed these off as they fought M. Bison and Ryu, respectively.

Birdie's V-triggers has a lot to do with eating. After eating a banana, he throws the peel the opponent's way so they will trip. He also throws a can of beverage after knocking it back to incur more damage. For his V-skill, he eats a hot pepper and turns into a fuming red beast to thump the opponent to death.

Cammy, whose character design only shows subtle changes, gets the famous Spin Knuckle with added speed for her V-skill, and the Canon Spike and Canon Strike for her V-triggers.

Apart from the four fighters mentioned, Chun Li will also be playable in "Street Fighter 5," which is set to come out in March next year.
