As "Star Trek Beyond" nears its theatrical release date, CBS is developing a new "Star Trek" television series with "Hannibal" series creator Bryan Fuller stepping in as showrunner. According to a report from BirthMoviesDeath, this new series will not be set in the same timeline as the three reboot films.
The 2009 reboot film directed by J.J. Abrams acknowledged the timeline of the previous films and television series but also created an alternate timeline where many events did not happen or happened differently. The report reveals that the new series takes place in the original timeline, setting itself just before "Star Trek: The Next Generation."
It is also explained that the first season will be set after "Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country." There are several years in between "The Undiscovered Country" and "The Next Generation," giving the developers of the new series a lot of freedom to craft any story that they wish to tell.
However, this is only for the first season. The report points out that the new series will be an anthology series similar to "American Horror Story" and "True Detective." This means any future season may be set in an entirely different time period or reality. It is entirely possible that a future season will be set in the reboot films' alternate timeline.
The report also reveals that Fuller will integrate Klingons as some of the main antagonists. Fans of the series will notice that during this point in the timeline, the Federation has already reached an agreement with the Klingon Empire, but it is possible that there are rogue Klingons fighting against this loose truce.
Unfortunately, it was not confirmed if this new show will be set aboard an Enterprise space ship or if it will utilize an entirely different type of space craft instead.
The new "Star Trek" series will premiere in 2017.
