'Star Trek 4' updates: Fate of movie sequel up in the air, says Zachary Quinto

While "Star Trek 3/Star Trek Beyond" fell in the good graces of movie critics, the positive reviews about it failed to translate into an impressive box-office performance. Because of this, despite "Star Trek 4" having already been announced, some can't help but suspect that it may not push through at all.

To recall, news about "Star Trek 4" being in development first came out in summer last year after the film's producer, J.J. Abrams, revealed that the said sequel would bring back Chris Hemsworth as George Kirk. However, after almost a year after the reveal of "Star Trek 4" was made, it is now said that the movie sequel may not happen at all.

Speculations on "Star Trek 4" possibly having already been axed surfaced recently after one of the movie franchise's actors, Zachary Quinto (who played the role of Mr. Spock in the past three movies), revealed that the script for the movie is not done yet, and that he is unsure whether it will push through or not.

"I know that they are working on a script for another one and we'll see how that all plays out, but the nice thing about that experience is that the time in between those big tentpole films allows us to go off and cultivate a lot of different creative experiences for ourselves. ... I'm hopeful that we'll do another one, but there's no guarantee," Quinto told the Today Show last week.

Based on the records of Box Office Mojo, "Star Trek 3" had a production budget of $185 million, but only managed to rake in $343,471,816 as its worldwide gross. Because of the poor box-office showing of the movie, some can't help but suspect that "Star Trek 4" may no longer happen at all. On the other hand, some believe that it is still possible for "Star Trek 4" to become a reality as Paramount Pictures may just be taking its time to get the script done and eventually give the project the green light.

Apparently, the fate of "Star Trek 4" is still very much up in the air.
