The San Diego Chargers secured one of their most efficient defensive contributors as they agreed to a five-year extension deal with defensive end Corey Liuget, the announcement was made Tuesday.

NFL Media Insider Ian Rapoport's source said the deal is worth $58.5 million with $30 million guaranteed.

Rapoport added that the Chargers are trying to make Liuget a part of their future.

Before the agreement the 25-year-old said it is important for a deal with the Chargers to be accomplished so he can focus with training camp, ESPN reported.

"It gives me a sense of relief a little bit. But overall, once it does get done I'll be very thankful that the Spanos family and the Chargers' organization wants me here, and that I'm a key part to helping our city and our team win a championship," Liuget added before the agreement.

Liuget is expected to lead the Chargers' defense since Jarret Johnson and Dwight Freeney are no longer with the team, ESPN added in the report.

"I feel like I can do a pretty good job at it. And we're definitely going to get where we need to go," Liuget said about the situation.

Liuget started 61 of 64 games played for San Diego in the past four seasons including 16 starts in all their games in 2014 and has not missed a game in the past three seasons.

He averaged 4.5 sacks to lead the Chargers in sacks for the second consecutive season.

"Corey is a consummate team player who goes about his work in an unselfish manner. His preparation and dedication to the game and the Chargers has been evident since day one," Chargers general manager Tom Telesco stated.

"Corey is talented, tough and durable, and plays a very important role in our defense. This extension is another reflection of our commitment to investing in our core players and homegrown talent," Telesco added.
