Samsung Galaxy S7 Active leaks: New information about smartphone surfaces

More signs that point to the existence of the Samsung Galaxy S7 Active come to light. According to prolific tipster Evan Blass, the new iteration of the flagship is codenamed Samsung Poseidon inside the tech company's labs.

For those who are not in the know, Samsung Galaxy S7 Active first stepped into the spotlight just days back, when it was spotted on its way to the U.S.-based carrier AT&T with the model number SM-G891A. At that time though, it wasn't recognized as the Samsung Galaxy S7 Active.

The "Poseidon" moniker, which can easily be associated with water, can mean that the smartphone will boast upgraded waterproof capabilities. After all, this is what "Active" iterations of Samsung flagships are known for.

This is why it makes sense that Samsung Galaxy S7 Active is the SM-G891A. In addition, its predecessor, the Samsung Galaxy S6 Active, was solely available in AT&T. From the looks of it, the exclusivity continues with the new version of the rugged device.

However, it is important to note that waterproofing isn't unprecedented in the Samsung Galaxy S7 lineup, seeing that the regular versions of the device already have the said feature. Samsung will need more than just waterproofing to make the Samsung Galaxy S7 Active stand out.

GSM Arena believes that making the device resistant to salt water will be a big step. Water-resistance beyond the IP68-rating of the basic versions of the Galaxy S7 may also be the way to go.

To parade its heightened durability, the Samsung Galaxy S7 Active is expected to sport a rugged appearance and a larger battery (the Samsung Galaxy S6 Active had a bigger battery than the regular Galaxy S6 units) when it officially sees the light of day.

When that will happen remains to be seen, but knowing it's already being tested at AT&T, it won't be long before the handset pops up.
