The opening ceremony for the Sochi Winter Olympics 2014 was held February 7, 2014. Sochi Winter Olympics

The 2014 Winter Olympic Opening Ceremony kicked off Feb. 7 in Sochi, Russia, with participants from 88 countries waving their national flags proudly to the cheering crowd.

The Sochi Olympics is the most expensive Olympic event to date, with Russia spending a record $50 million for the games.

This year's ceremony kicked off with five big snowflakes. Each snowflake turned into an Olympic ring, but one of the five snowflakes failed to open up to form a ring.

The Olympic cauldron was lit by Hockey star Vladislav Tretiak and gold-medalist Irina Rodnina. The Olympic torch was brought in by tennis champion Maria Sharapova who handed it to Alina Kabaeva.

The ceremony also featured a 200ft-long lit-up Troika, an 18th century carriage pulled by three horses.

Performances included the reenacting of the construction of St. Basil's Cathedral in Moscow.

The opening ceremony was all-in-all dazzling, despite the technical glitch at the beginning of the show.

The highly anticipated Team Figure Skating event kicked off on Feb. 6.

Today, the team Ladies Short program will take place, followed by the Ladies Long program on Sunday. The events will be available to stream online on NBCOlympics.com.
