'Mistresses' season 3: Show not affected by Alyssa Milano's departure

Mistresses original cast with Alyssa Milano ABC

Alyssa Milano left "Mistresses" last Oct. and fans have been speculating if the writers would have to time jump to roughly six months or a year following the season 2 finale to explain her character's departure.

The season 2 finale ended with the possibility of Milano's character Savi walking towards Joss and Harry, Savi's ex-husband, making out during Joss' wedding with Scott. Now that Milano is out of the picture it was speculated that her character would be written off after seeing her sister and ex-husband together.

"We really thought there was going to have to be a time jump, but they figured that out," actress Jes Macallan told TVLine. "Why skip away from the drama of the Season 2 finale and be like, 'Here are our characters six month later'? It'd feel like a disservice. Everybody had big news coming in."

Milano left the series when it was announced that the production would relocate to Vancouver, Canada. The actress stated that she would prioritize her duty as a mother to her two children who are both under the age of 4.

Replacing Milano is Jennifer Esposito. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Alyssa Milano will be playing a character named Calista Raines, a strong-willed and wild woman who works in the world of fashion.

Calista will be a mentor-figure and surrogate sister of sorts to Jes Macallan's Joss and will introduce the latter to a dark world of danger, betrayal, and scandals.

Jennifer Esposito is most notably remembered for her role in "Dracula 2000," "Law & Order: SVU" and "Blue Bloods."

Alyssa Milano has openly expressed her support for Esposito's casting as the new mistress. She posted via Twitter, "@JennifersWayJE You are going to love those ladies! They are a special group. And super talented. Blessings and love."

"Mistresses" season 3 is expected to air on ABC this coming June.
