Man of Steel 2 casting news: Jesse Eisenberg confirmed as Lex Luthor - Dwayne Johnson announcement coming soon?

 Warner Brothers

In the latest Man of Steel 2 casting news, Jesse Eisenberg has been confirmed to take on the role of lead villain Lex Luthor in the upcoming Superman vs Batman flick.

The "Social Network" actor will be starring alongside Henry Cavill's Superman and Ben Affleck's Batman in the highly anticipated Man of Steel sequel.

The announcement of Eisenberg's role as Lex Luthor was made by Warner Brothers last week and was a bit of a surprise to fans who were expecting their favorite contender Bryan Cranston to nab the role.

In other casting news, it has been revealed that Jeremy Irons will be taking on the role of Bruce Wayne's butler Alfred.

The cast seems to be coming along together, with Dwayne Johnson "The Rock" hinting that he will be taking on the role of the Green Lantern. Although no announcement has been made by Warner Brothers yet, Johnson sparked rumors last year by tweeting images with the production company. He even confirmed that he will be working on a Warner Brothers/DC Comics project, but didn't state specifics.

The release date of Man of Steel 2, aka Batman vs Superman film, has been pushed back from its original date of July 17, 2015 to May 6, 2016. Warner Brothers had pushed back the movie's release date to allow "the filmmakers time to fully realize their vision, given the complex visual nature of the story."

The Batman/Superman movie will see the return of Henry Cavill as Superman/Clark Kent. Amy Adams will reprise her role as Lois Lane, Diane Lane as Martha Kent, and Laurence Fishburne as the Daily Planet's Editor-in-Chief Perry White. Gal Gadot will star as Wonder Woman.

The Man of Steel sequel will be directed by Zack Snyder and has been scripted by David S. Goyer.
