The first sneak peek at the upcoming "Kong: Skull Island" has been released, courtesy of MTV. The film will deviate from the original "King Kong" as it is now set in the 1970s involving a band of Vietnam War veterans and a photojournalist as they journey into Skull Island.
As showcased in the featurette, Tom Hiddleston plays Captain James Conrad and appears to be the main leader of the expedition heading to Skull Island. The group is also joined by Oscar winner Brie Larson who plays a photojournalist named Weaver, who is presumably trying to get her scoop regarding Skull Island and the famed giant ape.
Corey Hawkins and Stephen Mitchell also appear to be soldiers working under Hiddleston's Conrad. It is unclear if they are first-timers heading to the island or if they are joining up with a group already present on the island, as another sequence reveals Samuel L. Jackson and John Goodman already busy looking for giant monsters.
According to a report from Cinema Blend, it appears that Jackson appears to be a militant leader of a group of soldiers currently on Skull Island. Goodman is pointed out to be some sort of leader -- either a political leader or just a rich businessman -- leading Jackson's soldiers to discover and presumably capture King Kong.
The film is set to play out very differently from the original film and is also set to be in a different cinematic universe than the remake made by Peter Jackson. The film is expected to tie into the 2014 "Godzilla" movie. As stated in a report from Screen Crush, the two films will lead to a third movie in 2020 that will see Godzilla and King Kong battle each other, bringing back to the big screen the "giant-monster" genre that faded in the 1990s and 2000s.
"Kong: Skull Island" will hit theaters theaters March 10, 2017, with "Godzilla 2" and "Godzilla vs King Kong" following after.
