Disney and Square Enix have already confirmed last year that Kingdom Hearts III will be released for Playstation 4 and Xbox One. Rumors say that it will roll out in Tokyo in May 2015, but this has yet to be confirmed. What is certain is that Kingdom Hearts HD 2.5 Remix is scheduled for release on Dec. 2.

But even while the 2.5 Remix version is getting ready to be released, KH III is being developed. In an interview, Kingdom Hearts III co-director Tai Yasue told Kotaku, "As a developer, I'm really excited. The technology is totally different, and creatively it's moving at leaps and bounds."

According to reports, the story starts from where it left off in Dream Drop Distance. Sora will come back as the game's protagonist along with Riku, Mickey, Donald Duck, and Goofy as well as other familiar Disney characters. The gameplay video shown last year at the Disney D23 Expo in Japan featured Disney rides being used for combat against a gigantic enemy.

"You could I guess imagine a theme park sort of ride-based action," Yasue said. "I think that might be an important part of the game, and so I think people can really look forward to that."

The game's director Tetsuya Nomura told Famitsu magazine in June last year, as reported by Polygon, "We're proceeding along with which worlds we'll be selecting for the game. It's the final episode in the 'Dark Seeker' saga that began with the original KH, and it'll depict the final battle with Xehanort."

Yasue said, "Kingdom Hearts 2.5 is gorgeous, I think, but Kingdom Hearts III is pure magic."
