Inspirational vicar carries Olympic torch

A much loved vicar is carrying the Olympic torch through Kensington and Chelsea today.

The Rev Bob Mayo was nominated by his congregation at St Stephen's Vicarage, Shepherd's Bush.

He suffers from epilepsy and experiences daily seizures, but remains dedicated to his work in transforming the parish.

Rev Mayo has increased attendance at the church by 100% and has spearheaded a variety of outreach projects, from playgroups and a cinema night, to line dancing for the elderly and hospitality for the homeless.

He is a trustee of Bermondsey Youth Centre, has run in several marathons, and is a chaplain of Queens Park Rangers Football Club.

Rev Mayo said he was "delighted" to be taking part in the torch relay today.

"I will be keeping my torch in St Stephen’s with the hope to inspire the community of Shepherd’s Bush and have it available to everyone," he said.

"The symbol of 8,000 ‘inspirational’ people running with the Olympic flame from Land's End to the Olympic Stadium has captured people’s imagination and it is bringing communities together along its way.

"I want Shepherds Bush to benefit in the same way too, and I am very grateful to those who came together and nominated me.”
