'Indiana Jones 5' spoilers, cast news: Spielberg hints at Harrison Ford's return

Harrison Ford as Indiana Jones LucasFilm

Highly acclaimed director Steven Spielberg recently spoke with Yahoo! Movies to promote his most recent film "Bridge of Spies" starring Tom Hanks. During the interview, he mentioned "Indiana Jones 5" to which he also teased the possible return of Harrison Ford in the titular role.

"We've gotta figure this out because now, Tom is tied with Harrison Ford: Harrison and I did four movies, Tom and I have done four movies," Spielberg stated. "Now I'll probably do an 'Indy 5' with Harrison, so it'll be five for Harrison, four for Tom."

As previously reported, LucasFilm and Disney do have the intentions of making a new "Indiana Jones" film, although it isn't slated to release until 2017 or 2018. There have also been rumblings of Chris Pratt or Bradley Cooper taking over the role, although this latest interview seems to in the opposite direction of these rumors.

Back in February Chris Pratt responded to the rumors, stating that "It's all nothing until it's something, and so far? It's not something." The actor did state that it would be "cool" to be cast as Jones despite the incredible pressure due to the role's iconic place in film history, stating that it had to be perfect.

During an episode of "Collider Movie Talk," hosts John Campea and Kristian Harloff explained that it is possible for both Harrison Ford and a new, younger actor to play Indiana Jones in the same film.

According to Harloff, the film could start with Ford playing the older version of the character and then later switching to the younger actor for the rest of the film, telling the movie's story as a form of flashback while also establishing the younger actor as Jones to the audience.

There is no confirmation if Spielberg was joking about the casting or if there really is an intention to cast Harrison Ford. Ford has been making a comeback lately with his return to "Star Wars: The Force Awakens" and his rumored return in the upcoming "Blade Runner 2," so coming back for "Indiana Jones 5" remains in the realms of possibilities.
