iMac Pro 2017 release date, specs news: AMD Radeon GPUs packaged in 2.5D tech, other variant in flip-chip

Since its announcement in April, several outfits had been providing some details to the specifications of the most-awaited iMac Pro from tech giant Apple. It was announced to be released by December this year.

DigiTimes reported that Apple had already begun ordering graphics processing units (GPUs) from AMD in September. So, this is clearly a good sign that the iMac Pro is in the works, which means that Apple will probably hit the target date of launch. The high-end tech was reported to come with AMD Radeon graphics card as well.

"The new iMac series adopt GPUs supplied by AMD, with the super workstation-class 27-inch iMac Pro equipped with Radeon Pro Vega 56 GPU and 8 GB HBM2 memory or Radeon Pro Vega 64 and 16 GB HBM2 memory," according to the report.

The report also noted that outsourced semiconductor assembly and test (OSAT) companies in Taiwan were already using 2.5D technology for the packaging of the upscale GPUs. Those of the general variant will come in flip-chip packaging. Responsible for the management of the GPUs is the Silicon Precision Industries (SPIL), while King Yuan Electronics will do the testing.

For display, the product will sport a 5K Retina, but touchscreen features are still far from reality, at least for this high-end product. Aside from this, fans can expect a seamless coordination of the mean machine. The fan system used was reported to increase cooling by 80 percent, meaning less chance of an overheating as well as a quieter system.

On Apple's annual WWDC event, when the tech company usually announces updates, upgrades, and new products, the iMac Pro was revealed. It had since garnered awe with its reported specifications. It will come in Space Grey as well. Apple also made known during the event the iPad Pro 10.5 that will come slightly bigger than the 9.7 inches variant. The Apple Pencil will also be improved for a much smoother experience.
