I Have Become All Things

I have become all things to all men so that by all possible means I might save some. I do this for the sake of the gospel, that I might share in its blessings...
- 1 Corinthians 9:22-23, NIV

A Muslim country gave Ron ("missionary"), a visa at the request of the church there, which then sent him to serve a difficult tribal area. U.S. seminarians study subjects related to the Christian faith, like theology. They are trained in pastoral duties, such as preaching or church leadership. It's unlikely any will be taught to dance. Liturgical dance as a worship option maybe. Actual training as a dancer? No. But dancing is what Ron did—eventually, anyway.

Those "tribals" were closed to the gospel, but open to dancing, especially at weddings. So Ron learned traditional music forms; then wrote songs with Christian words regarding love and marriage, and accompanying choreography. They were wildly popular. New music! New dances! Who cares if they are Christian words! Ron was invited to sing and dance in many villages. People who wouldn't tolerate a sermon listened to the music and asked questions. The gospel took root and grew. Now, many newlyweds and their guests not only dance for joy, but believe in the Lord of the Dance, too.

We must be open to the Spirit's leading, and willing even to put our training aside as we explore all means for reaching lost people.

Prayer: Holy Spirit, make me flexible with respect to training and gifts, so I can be your effective servant. Amen.
