'Guardians of the Galaxy 2' sequel news: Captain Marvel/ Carol Danvers not in the film

Director James Gunn recently announced via Twitter that people shouldn't immediately assume his favorite superhero is male. This has caused the fans and movie critics alike to speculate that Carol Danvers a.k.a. Captain Marvel would be in "Guardians of the Galaxy 2." That rumor has just been crushed.

Just a few days later, Gunn tweeted a firm confirmation that Captain Marvel would not be making an appearance in the film.

Marvel Studios confirmed last year that Captain Marvel would officially be a part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. It is possible that Gunn is simply not allowed to announce the character's inclusion in "Guardians of the Galaxy 2" or she really may not be in the film.

It is also possible that she is in the film but not called Captain Marvel. In the source material, Phyla-Vell, daughter of the male version of Captain Marvel, also took on the mantle of the superhero but she was known as Quasar.

The director's tweets hint that his favorite superhero would be in the sequel, but now that Captain Marvel has been ruled out, there are only a few remaining selections that could fit into the universe that he and Marvel created for the silver screen.

Fans have speculated that Moondragon is the character Gunn is referring to. It would make a better fit seeing that Moondragon is the daughter of Drax and was presumably killed by the first film's villain.

Another speculation from sites such as IGN and Screenrant is that Gunn could be referring to Adam Warlock. The character made an appearance in the first film but in his cocoon form. Fans have speculated that the character may have "hatched" and would be playing a pivotal role in the sequel.

A solo "Captain Marvel" film will be released on Nov.2, 2018.
