'GTA 5' Story DLC may have been killed by 'GTA Online'

"Grand Theft Auto V" was released back in 2013 and to date, there is no single-player story-driven DLC for the game. Instead, game developer Rockstar has focused on delivering new multiplayer DLCs for "Grand Theft Auto Online." In an interview with IGN, Rockstar North Director of Design Imran Sarwar confirmed that the whole team is working on "GTA Online."

"Right now, our focus is on 'GTA Online,' which has exceeded our expectations," he replied when asked about the future of single-player DLC. "We currently have all key members of the team that launched 'Grand Theft Auto V' focused on supporting 'GTA Online' in every capacity."

As pointed out in a report from iDigital Times, if every key member of the development team is working on the online aspect — which currently has over 8 million players logging in per week — then it means no one is working on the single player story-driven DLC for "GTA V."

It could also mean that development for the next "Grand Theft Auto" game, "GTA VI," may be pushed back even further as the developers are now currently focused on their online offering. This may end up as a similar situation to Blizzard's "Warcraft" franchise which saw a halt to their RTS lineup once the MMORPG "World of Warcraft" was launched.

However, the report does cite several forum users and game hackers who have exposed hints of a possible story DLC in the works, such as a DLC introducing zombies to "GTA V" with Michael as the main character. With no official announcement coming from Rockstar North, however, all of these hints remain rumors.

The latest DLC that came out is the "Freemode Events" update for "GTA Online." Like previous DLC content such as "Heists," the update is for free but gamers can still avail of premium content via in-game micro-transactions. The latest DLC offers events that can be triggered at any time while in Freemode and it introduces the Rockstar Editor to Xbox One and PS4 players.
