In classic "Grey's Anatomy" fashion, the midseason finale ended with a cliffhanger as the fate of one of the original cast members hangs in the balance.

In the episode entitled "You Haven't Done Nothin'," the fate of Dr. Alex Karev (Justin Chambers) remains uncertain after his girlfriend Jo (Camilla Luddington) finally came clean about being married to an abusive husband. Jo confessed about her past to explain why she was with Deluca (Giacomo Gianniotti) on the fateful night that Alex beat him up.

Alex stands to face two years in prison if he agrees to a plea bargain, which would protect Jo from testifying in court and exposing her whereabouts to her estranged husband. However, there is still hope that Alex will not to go to jail if Deluca will withdraw the charges, reported iTechPost.

The episode showed Alex mulling whether he should just take the plea deal but Meredith (Ellen Pompeo) is strongly opposed to this, telling him that they are the only two remaining from their batch and that if he leaves her, she will be left alone.

Amelia (Caterina Scorsone) has also left Owen (Kevin McKidd) after she figured out that she wasn't ready to have children, something that Owen wanted dearly.

When the show returns, it is expected that Alex will have finally decided what to do with his legal woes. If he takes the deal, it may be a while before audiences see Chambers on the show but it could also mean that Jo's husband could also pop in for a guest appearance or an extended arc.

It could also be Jo who leaves Grey-Sloan Memorial for fear of being found by her husband.

Meanwhile, fans are expecting the relationship of Dr. Richard Weber (James Pickens Jr.) and Dr. Miranda Bailey (Chandra Wilson) to be strained when the show returns for season 13B after Miranda decided that Richard would be replaced by Eliza (Marika Dominczyk), reported IBTimes.

The show is expected to return for its second half on January 19, 2017.
