Meredith Grey (Ellen Pompeo) in Grey's Anatomy season 12 ABC

ABC has been airing "Grey's Anatomy" for 12 seasons, but executive producer Shonda Rhimes vowed that the drama will never cease for the doctors in the Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital when the series returns next year.

In a recent interview with Entertainment Weekly, the executive producer revealed that viewers of the show will see the transitions in Meredith Grey's (Ellen Pompeo) life after the first half of season 12.

"It's been really fun getting to explore Meredith and where she's going and who she's becoming," Rhimes said. "That evolution continues. We've been having a blast."

The executive producer also teased that the first episode after the long winter break will be extra special. The episode, titled "The Sound of Silence," will be directed by award-winning actor Denzel Washington. Rhimes said that the episode will pave a new direction at the start of the second half of the season.

Meanwhile, the show added "The Young and the Restless" star Scott Elrod to appear in at least one episode of "Grey's Anatomy" season 12.

The actor, known for portraying the role of the scheming Joe Clark in the popular soap, shared several details about his role in "Grey's Anatomy" through his Instagram account.

In one of his posts, Elrod showed a photo of his character Will Thorpe's ID and doctor's coat. It revealed that his character is a military staff who works as a surgical oncology doctor. He might need the help of Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital in one of his cases, which is why he has to visit the Seattle hospital.

The actor also shared a photo of the hospital entrance in one of his latest posts.

The second half of "Grey's Anatomy" season 12 is expected to answer a lot of questions left hanging at the end of the midseason finale during its premiere on Feb. 11 on ABC.
