"Final Fantasy XV" has been in development for a decade, with its first appearance popping up as far back as 2006, when it was initially presented as "Final Fantasy Versus XIII." The game is finally being released, with a report from Gematsu stating that the game is rumored to be launching globally on Sept. 30 this year.
According to the report, three separate unidentified sources have shared the game's supposed release date, indicating that this may be more valid than previously believed. The game is said to launch for the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One, although a PC version via Steam is also being rumored.
The report points out that Square-Enix will make the official announcement at the "Uncovered: Final Fantasy XV" event, which will be held in Los Angeles, California on March 30. Given the name of the event, it is likely that the final release date will be announced. The event is being advertised as a special day for "announcements and surprises."
Square-Enix previously confirmed that "Final Fantasy XV" will be released sometime in 2016, although no specific release window has been given. The report from Gematsu's sources will be the closest to a concrete release date that fans of the franchise will get until the developers prove otherwise.
Despite this, Gematsu does point out that the release date may still change even after Square-Enix announces the Sept. 30 launch date. This may occur to allow the development team to implement further improvements, address several bugs and glitches or to move the game to a more reliable release date where profits are likely to be higher.
"Final Fantasy XV" will be the first game in the franchise to launch simultaneously worldwide and is also the first main entry in the franchise to be made specifically for the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One. Previous entries, such as "Final Fantasy X/X-2 HD" have been given a PS4 port. "Final Fantasy VII" is being remade for the PS4 as well.
