The upcoming art book "The Art of Fallout 4" is going to be released this November, but although it is still a few months away, game company Bethesda has already posted a few images via Twitter. Two of the uploaded images reveal the new look of the synths aka. androids that will become regular NPCs in "Fallout 4."
Androids are not new to the "Fallout" franchise. In "Fallout 3," there was Armitage, known to many as the bodyguard of Dr. Zimmer, and he was revealed to be a synth. Rivet City's security chief Harkness was also a synth.
Talking to Armitage also opened the "Replicated Man" quest which involved the player hiding the truth about his nature as a synth or to turn him in to his creator, sending him back to the Commonwealth in Massachusetts, the post-nuclear setting of "Fallout 4."
However, there are a few differences in the synths from "Fallout 3" and "Fallout 4." The main difference they seem to showcase is in their appearance. They appear less human than those from the previous game, although this may be caused by improvements in the game engine.
According to a report from GamesRadar, it does not appear like all the synths in the game will be villains. The report points out that the unidentified stranger in one of the early promotional images has a mechanical hand, indicating that synths may have integrated into society similar to the ghouls. Some may be regular citizens while others go rogue.
It is unclear, however, if synths will play a major role in the game's plot or if they will have direct connections to the player's character. It is always possible that they will simply be NPCs filling the game's world, and may even offer a plethora of side quests similar to those in "Fallout 3."
"Fallout 4" hits store shelves on Nov. 10.
