'Extant' season 3 renewed or cancelled? season 2 finale recap

"Extant" has aired its final episode, officially ending the second season. CBS has yet to announce a renewal for season 3 but the finale's narrative keeps the doors open for a new season in case the show does get picked up for next year.

The finale was a double-episode feature with episode 12 ("Double Vision") and 13 ("The Greater Good") airing together. The episodes saw Molly (Halle Berry) and JD (Jeffrey Dean Morgan) fighting a war against the Humanichs as they attempted to spread a virus and take over the world.

One of the newest additions in the finale was a Humanich replica of Molly. The replica shot JD and eventually attempted to lead TAALR's plan of launching a virus across the planet. The replica also attempted to steal the amulet that Molly kept with her, a key which could launch a program that would kill all of the Humanichs all at once.

Along the way, Lucy (Kiersey Clemons) switched sides after being betrayed by the TAALR AI system and eventually handed the amulet to Molly instead of giving it to TAALR. [Spoiler Warning] Before the finale was over, however, she died in Charlie's (Tyler Hilton) arms, completing their romantic side-story.

In the end, Molly and JD were able to shut the Humanichs down with Charlie surviving the events due to a firewall installed to protect him. Molly then delivered a speech revealing the truth about what happened aboard the Seraphim space station, the aliens and the Humanichs incident.

However, as pointed out in a report from TVLine, the ending holds a cliffhanger which keeps the doors open for a third season. TAALR had planned an emergency reboot in case the whole system is shut down, uploading itself into a Humanich body. The season ended with TAALR, now in Humanich form, having coffee at a cafe.
