City Festival aims at Community Renewal in Liverpool

A church-initiated festival is due to hit Liverpool’s boroughs in a bid to build tighter, more sociable communities around the city.

Merseyfest is teaming up with members of the local community, as well as local businesses and service providers, to run a week-long schedule of activities split between community projects for the first four days, followed by a Family Fun weekend in Liverpool’s Croxteth Park.

The activities are all voluntary and designed to draw in all the resources of the communities, with sporting and crafts events taking place in local churches, parks, sports centres and right on the very city streets.

Aside from sports and crafts, the festival includes numerous environmental activities like litter picking or shore line clean up projects, as well as urban renewal projects like refurbishment of the Millennium Green, and meeting with asylum seekers.

The Merseyfest family weekend finale has an impressive schedule of events and activities, all free of charge, including bands and DJs, breakdancers, Europe’s largest outdoor skatepark, bungee jumping and a massive fireworks display.

The festival will run from the 14 to 21 August. A fundraiser gig for the event will be held Wednesday 27 July at the Frontline Church headlined by Liverpool band Supervision.
