Church community shop to help tackle debt

The Storehouse Community Shop

A new charity shop set up by churches to support people in debt in a Welsh town opens its doors for the first time this week.

Storehouse Community Shop in Aberkenfig is being launched just as the peak Christmas shopping season kicks in and will be selling good quality second hand goods like books and clothing.

The shop is a joint project by eight churches and chapels, and will raise money to set up a new Christians Against Poverty debt counselling centre as well as fund projects run by local charities.

It is being opened on Tuesday by the Archbishop of Wales, Dr Barry Morgan.

Reverend Stephen Pare, priest-in-charge of Aberkenfig, said: "It's the result of nearly two years of regular, weekly-united prayer meetings.

"Our aim is to provide a service for the community while at the same time raising money to set up a debt centre. The charity, Christians Against Poverty, supports those in debt, helping some 20-50 families a week become debt-free.

"None of the money the Storehouse raises will assist the running costs of the churches and chapels – it will all go to the community."

A generous donation is funding part-time shop manager and assistant manager posts, while a team of volunteers will help out with the day-to-day running of the store.

Also present at the official opening will be the Reverend Chris Gray, Assistant Chair of the Methodist Synod, who will cut the cake.
