Carrie Underwood's husband Mike Fisher shares how God changed his life for the better

Carrie Underwood's husband Mike Fisher, who also plays professional hockey for the Nashville Predators, is sharing how his Christian faith helped get him through life's storms and brought him closer to his wife.

Ever since he was just a young boy, all Fisher wanted to do was play hockey. When he turned 19, he got his wish—he got to sign his first National Hockey League (NHL) contract.

But the world of sports is very demanding, not only physically but also emotionally and spiritually. Fisher felt like his life was getting out of hand since hockey was dominating him. On the outside, everything looked great for Fisher—his career was on the upswing, and he had a great salary to boot. But things weren't as great on the inside.

"I was trying to pretend that everything was great," Fisher told I Am Second. "Still going to church, but maybe be hung over, not really into it, but putting up kind of a facade."

It was only when his cousin was having a Bible study that he encountered the Bible verses Luke 9:23-25. It said: "If you want to be a follower of Me, you have to put aside your own selfish desires, shoulder your cross daily, and follow Me. If you try to keep your life for yourself, you will lose it. If you give up your life for Me, you will find true life. What do you benefit if you gain the whole world but lose your own soul in the process?"

It really struck a chord with Fisher, and he sought to repair his tarnished relationship with God. "It didn't happen overnight, but slowly God changed me on the inside," he said. "I tried to not worry about the don'ts, but focus on just pursuing Him."

Now, Fisher boasts of a solid relationship with God and it even helped bring him closer to his wife, who shares the same faith. "It wasn't religion anymore. It was a real relationship," he said.
