There are certain relationships in our lives that aren't meant to be cherished and upheld, much less retained, especially after we have decided in our hearts and minds to fully follow the Lord Jesus Christ. One such kind of relationship is the one that you have with your ex.
'But why?'
Apparently, many will not understand the reason why we should cut ties with our exes, especially those who don't understand the implications of retaining them. To help clarify things, let's define the term "questionable relationships" first.
Ask yourself if that former relationship that you had was clean. Did it have some sort of sexual lust or promiscuity present at any time? Did that relationship take your focus off of God at any moment while it lasted? If you say "yes" to any of these, then that relationship and all "friendly" communication that you might have with that ex need to be cut - even if it's something as seemingly 'harmless' as being Facebook friends.
Radical repentance
Some will not want to hear that, but if you've totally repented of that former relationship, then it's best to follow your repentance with physical, emotional, mental, and spiritual distance. Consider God's goodness to you that He took you out of that wrong relationship, just so that you could be in the right place at the right time.
Psalm 103:8-12 tells us:
"The Lord is compassionate and merciful, slow to get angry and filled with unfailing love. He will not constantly accuse us, nor remain angry forever. He does not punish us for all our sins; he does not deal harshly with us, as we deserve. For his unfailing love toward those who fear him is as great as the height of the heavens above the earth. He has removed our sins as far from us as the east is from the west."
Read that last line again. "He has removed our sins as far from us as the east is from the west." Let that sink in.
If we have repented of that sinful relationship, we must understand that God has taken away that sin from us and placed it far away. Who are we to maintain any connection with a person with whom we've had a sinful relationship with if God took our sin to a place far away from us?
Great mercies
Friends, consider it God's mercy that He took you away from those questionable relationships in your life. Think about it. Would you rather be there right now, stuck in the awfully sticky and stinky mud called sin? Or would you rather be free to live your life and do what God wants you to do? Choose for yourself wisely. Cut wrong connections before it's too late!
For the married people
If you're married, then this one's a no-brainer. Never ever keep in touch with an ex, because in marriage, we've all decided to forsake all others and love the only one that God has entrusted to us. Your spouse deserves your faithfulness and integrity in your relationship.
Remind yourself of Song of Solomon 2:15, which says, "Catch all the foxes, those little foxes, before they ruin the vineyard of love, for the grapevines are blossoming!"
