Golden Boy Oscar De La Hoya said in a radio interview that he has always thought about returning to the ring and facing the best if he does and in a clip posted by BlackSportsOnline, Floyd Mayweather said his former rival can return and he will grant him a rematch.

De La Hoya and Mayweather only fought in 2007 and the currently unbeaten welterweight champion walked away with a split decision victory.

But in that fight, De La Hoya pushed Mayweather to the limits and had the advantage in the earlier rounds landing significant shots including flurries.

Following the bout, De La Hoya returned in 2008 and defeated Steve Forbes but was also beaten by eight-division champion Manny Pacquiao in the same year signalling his resignation from the sport.

Since then the 42-year-old started Golden Boy Promotions and busied himself being a fight promoter.

In BlackSportsOnline's posted video Mayweather said, "Oscar ... He's coming back. I mean if he wants to, we can rock 'n' roll in the same gym. ... He said he wanted a rematch, so if Oscar wants it, he can get it."

De La Hoya answered Mayweather with a video posted on his Instagram account entitled, "Split Decision."

"So I hear Floyd wants to give me a rematch now. Our first fight had a rematch clause. It had to take place within the year. He retired a year and one day," De La Hoya said in the short clip.

"Look, I'm retired, I'm happy, I'm content. I'm never coming back. I'm going to continue growing Golden Boy," the 1992 Olympic gold medalist added.

Mayweather is set to fight for the last time this September and a rematch with De La Hoya might bring the desired pay-per-view numbers and would likely guarantee his 49th consecutive victory.

Although the fight may be criticised since it has been nearly eight years since De La Hoya last stepped inside the ring and Mayweather is coming off a bout which did not provide the action the fans wanted.
