Arthur Curry aka Aquaman (Jason Mamoa) had a very small cameo in "Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice" but will be given a solo movie, which will be released after the first "Justice League" movie. Speaking with IGN during WonderCon, director James Wan gave some insight into what kind of adaptation fans could look forward to.
The director acknowledged the fact that Aquaman has been made fun of in recent years, with parodies poking fun at the character in "Entourage," "Family Guy" and even "Spongebob Squarepants." However, the director stated that the film will portray Aquaman in a new light, showcasing the true power and potential of this character.
During the interview, it was pointed out that there has been some backlash regarding the very dark and overtly serious tone with "Batman v Superman" and Wan confirmed that while "Aquaman" will retain themes of this in order to stay consistent since they are in the same cinematic universe, the film will have some lighter elements to it.
"I think Aquaman is a character that a lot of people have made fun of over the years, and I just think it's fun to actually show a really different, cool, badass side to this character," he explained. "But at the same time, let's not forget to have fun with it."
In a report from /Film, the director explained that while the film will have technical obstacles in shooting since many scenes will be done underwater, it will still utilize Wan's mentality in regards to filmmaking. Wan pointed out that in most of his low-budget films, the main focus was all about story and characters and that will translate to "Aquaman."
Wan also pointed out that he finds it amazing how man has explored space more so than the depths of the ocean, indicating that he will draw up fantastical creatures and sea monsters for Aquaman to battle in the film.
"Aquaman" will open in theaters on July 27, 2018.
