3 tips to safeguard yourself from spiritual error

1. Soak Yourself In God's Word

Nothing protects us from spiritual error more than God's Word does. Psalm 119:9-11 shows us the beauty of treasuring God's Word in our hearts:

"How can a young man cleanse his way? By taking heed according to Your word. With my whole heart I have sought You; Oh, let me not wander from Your commandments! Your word I have hidden in my heart, that I might not sin against You."

Jon Bloom, in an article in DesiringGod.org, noted that Andrew Fuller (1754-1815), one of co-founders of the Baptist Missionary Society along with William Carey, loved and knew his Bible so well. It's because of his knowledge of God's Word that he was able to defend the truths of the Bible, and correct the wrong teachings that proliferated during his time.

2. Allow Others To Sharpen You

Proverbs 27:17 tells us, "As iron sharpens iron, so a friend sharpens a friend." Having other Christ-following, Bible-believing Christian friends check your faith and beliefs will greatly help in correcting whatever is wrong in your faith. Believe me, this really works.

Ecclesiastes 4:9-10 tells us, "Two people are better off than one, for they can help each other succeed. If one person falls, the other can reach out and help. But someone who falls alone is in real trouble."

3. Continually Remind Yourself Of The Gospel Of Christ

Of all things we must never steer away from, topping the list should be the gospel of the Lord Jesus Christ – what He has done.

Hebrews 2:1 tells us, "So we must listen very carefully to the truth we have heard, or we may drift away from it." There is only one gospel, one message of salvation that we must believe in: the life, death and resurrection of Christ. Hold on to it no matter what happens.

Paul admonishes us, "Let God's curse fall on anyone, including us or even an angel from heaven, who preaches a different kind of Good News than the one we preached to you. I say again what we have said before: If anyone preaches any other Good News than the one you welcomed, let that person be cursed" (Galatians 1:8-9).

Let's not believe any other "gospel," no matter how good-sounding or promising it may seem. No other message of salvation truly saves, other than the gospel of Jesus Christ.
