2018 Ford Mustang release date, specs: new details leaked, V6 engine could be out

The Ford Mustang is one of the most iconic cars in the history of the American brand and one of the biggest reasons why it remains as popular as it was back when the first four-seater was unveiled in 1963 is its engine configuration, allowing it to be one of the most powerful in the road for several decades now. But with a recently leaked document showing information about the upcoming 2018 Ford Mustang, the iconic car could be in for a huge change of direction, and there's a cloud of uncertainty as to whether or not this change could affect the reputation of the vehicle.

According to the leak, the car will be ditching its traditional V6 engine and will have a new 10-speed automatic transmission. While the second offering is quite interesting, the first one is more of an intriguing change to a Ford model that's been living it up to this era, thanks primarily to its V6 engine.

And if it really is true that the V6 engine is ditched, it means that the 2018 edition of the Mustang will only be made up of two engine options — the economical 2.3-liter EcoBoost and the 5.0-liter supercharged V8 for the GT variant.

But the absence of the V6 engine shouldn't be that much of a loss though considering that those who don't want to compromise on power can at least shell out some additional cash to get the V8 Mustang GT.

Likewise, there are several other new features that will make loyalists forget about what's not included. Aside from the new automatic transmission, there also are reports that the two variants will be equipped with the magnetorheological dampers, or most commonly known as MagneRide, originally seen on the Shelby GT350.

Ford has not provided confirmation about this latest development, although interested parties and observers will get the details they want in next year's Detroit Auto Show, an event that the 2018 Ford Mustang is expected to be part of.
