'The Flash' season 2 news: Robbie Amell returns but with a twist

Robbie Amell's Ronnie Raymond was a highly acclaimed recurring guest in "The Flash" season 1 but perished in the season 2 premiere, leading Martin Stein (Victor Garber) to find a new partner in Jefferson Jackson (Franz Drameh).

However, according to a report from Entertainment Weekly, Amell will be returning later this season.

However, instead of bringing Ronnie back from the dead or simply stating he survived being eaten up into the black hole the studios will instead be bringing in the Earth-Two version of Ronnie.

"We are beyond excited to have Robbie back on 'The Flash'," explained executive producer Andrew Kreisberg. "You can't keep a good Firestorm down. Only this time, he's back with a twist, a deadly Earth-Two version of our beloved Ronnie in the form of Deathstorm."

In the comic book source materials, Ronnie Raymond died and was brought back to life by the Black Lanterns, essentially turning him into an evil, sentient zombie with similar powers to the Green Lantern. Deathstorm in the comics is in fact Martin Stein from Earth-Three.

According to a report from Cinema Blend, it is very likely that Deathstorm in "The Flash" will be a combination of the two versions in the comic books.

A previous report also confirmed that Earth-Two Ronnie isn't the only one that went down the dark path. The report showcased that the Earth-Two counterpart of Caitlin Snow (Danielle Panabaker) also gained powers and is known as the villain Killer Frost. Like her Earth-One version, this Caitlin is also married to Ronnie.

It is very likely that the Flash (Grant Gustin) will be facing the evil couple when he and the rest of the team have to travel to Earth-Two in order to stop Zoom and rescue Harrison Well's (Tom Cavanagh) daughter. It is also possible that either Deathstorm or Killer Frost will crossover to Earth-One.

"The Flash" season 2 will return this Jan. 19.
