'Shameless' season 6 spoilers: Debbie is pregnant

Will Debbie resort to aborting her unborn child in "Shameless" season 6? Facebook/Showtime

Fans will finally learn whether or not Debbie (Emma Kenney) is indeed pregnant with her boyfriend Derek's (Luca Oriel) child when Showtime's comedy-drama series returns for its sixth installment.

In the last season finale, Debbie was seen staring at a pregnancy test with mixed emotions. When she and Derek had sex, she lied to him and said she was on birth control. But in reality, she wanted to have his child and be part of his "normal" family.

Debbie yearned to belong to a happy household and in her mind, her boyfriend's was one. The International Business Times reports that the teenager's way of thinking was due to her lack of real adult to look up to. Her father Frank (William H. Macy) and elder sister Fiona (Emmy Rossum) have not been good role models when it comes to relationships.

The teenager's reaction to the test result seem to confirm that she succeeded in her plan, but was soon regretting it after reality hit her. While her face lit up at first when she glanced at the kit, she then looked terrified, presumably of what might become of her future. As for Derek, his big dreams for himself and his family could come crashing down once Debbie's pregnancy is confirmed. Would they be able to raise a kid, when they are still children themselves?

In an interview with Deadline, Macy has hinted that the first part of season 6 will be "all about pregnancy." Some viewed this as the actor's verification that his character's daughter is indeed carrying a child. He said, however, that the storyline will involve an abortion. Does he mean Debbie's child will be terminated?

"We're dealing with abortion as only 'Shameless' can deal with it. Frank's position is typically unexpected and right out of left field, and his logic is sort of bewildering," the actor said.

"Shameless" season 6 will premiere in January 2016 on Showtime.
