'GTA 6' release date rumors: Speculations point to time between 2018 and 2020

"Grand Theft Auto V" was initially launched back in 2013, making the game already two years old. In video game terms, that makes it quite old as new titles are released on a monthly basis. With that in mind, it is likely that development on a sequel is in the works although according to a report from Trusted Reviews, the game might not be released until sometime between 2018 and 2020.

The report details that expecting the game to roll out before 2018 would be a tad too optimistic. This makes sense given that the updated version of "GTA V" has just hit the Xbox One and PS4, featuring first-person gameplay unseen on last-gen consoles. Also, Rockstar Games is putting emphasis on "Grand Theft Auto Online."

If the game studio follows the route taken by Blizzard, it may take even longer before the company releases "GTA VI." Blizzard hasn't worked on a follow-up to "WarCraft III" ever since they launched the massively successful "World of Warcraft."

Moreover, the gap between "GTA III" and "GTA IV" was a total of seven years while it took five years for the developers to release "GTA V." If they do indeed release the next main title by 2018, this would give them a development cycle of roughly 5 years. These are mere speculations, however, and there are no confirmations that they are even actively working on "GTA VI" for the time being.

There are also no confirmations if the next game will once again take place in Liberty City or if it will encompass a much larger landscape than that seen in any previous entry. There are speculations that "GTA VI" will feature an entire country with several cities to visit although Rockstar has yet to confirm or deny any of these rumors.

"We've got about 45 years worth of ideas we want to do," said Rockstar North president Leslie Benzies back in 2013, almost immediately after "GTA V" was launched. "We don't know what GTA 6 will be, but we've got some ideas."
