Free week of concerts at Llandaff Cathedral

Proceeds from the concerts will go towards the cathedral's Nicholson organ

Welsh music lovers are being invited along to Llandaff Cathedral for a week of free concerts next month.

The sixth Llandaff Festival gets underway on 8 June with a Night at the Opera concert by Llandaff Cathedral Choral Society.

The diverse programme includes brass, jazz and baroque performances, as well as an organ recital by Huw Tregelles Williams.

Visitors will be able to indulge in afternoon teas with delicious homemade cakes and each day will be capped by a majestic choral evensong.

In addition to the Llandaff Cathedral Choir, performers come from the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama and Welsh National Opera. They are giving their time for free.

Proceeds from the concerts will go towards the cathedral's £1.5m organ appeal. Previous concerts have raised £130,000 towards the Nicholson organ and profits from this year's festival will cover the cost of the organ's solo and pedal departments.

The festival will end with a service of thanksgiving on Sunday 17 June.

Festival director, Canon Graham Holcombe said, "Since relaunching the Llandaff Festival six years ago, we have hosted 50 concerts and events, with several thousand visitors, many of whom were new to Llandaff, and became the platform for many young musicians' launch into their careers.

"The leadership team spans to more than 70 people who donate their time and talents with joy, energy and enthusiasm.

"Llandaff Festival young performers have won international competitions and played across the world while gaining great support from the audiences here in Llandaff.

"We are very grateful to all the artists, performers and volunteers who are giving their time and talent towards the completion of the solo and pedal departments of the sensational Nicholson organ."
