'XCOM 2' PS4 release date news: PC exclusivity ends as console versions set to release later in 2016

The sequel to "XCOM: Enemy Unknown" launched last year for the PC. Developer Firaxis Games must have listened to fan feedback since then as "XCOM 2" ends its PC exclusivity and is confirmed to be coming to consoles later this year.

On the US PlayStation Blog, Firaxis Games lead producer Garth DeAngelis wrote that originally "XCOM 2" was not supposed to come out for consoles, but the team may have heard that most of the fans are wishing for the game to have its PlayStation 4 version.

"Every forum post, passionate tweet, Facebook message, and letter about getting XCOM 2 on console was heard loud and clear. We have diehard console-focused fans who let us know in every way possible they wanted to play the game too. That's dedication we wouldn't ignore," DeAngelis stated.

"XCOM 2" will come out for PlayStation 4 on Sept. 6 in North America. There is also a global release scheduled on Sept. 9.

Meanwhile, "XCOM 2" will be a current-gen console title, as Gamespot reports that publisher 2K Games also confirmed that the sequel will be released for the Xbox One with the same September launch dates. However, the industry follower said that while the console versions of the game will be direct ports of the PC title, Firaxis Games has yet to confirm if all features will also be included, like the modding feature that went with the PC version.

"XCOM 2" for consoles that come with the mod feature is certainly possible, since it will not be the first recent release to do so. Just recently, developer Bethesda has updated its PlayStation 4 and Xbox One releases of "Fallout 4," with the update unlocking the game modding feature.

It is also expected that the console versions will come out with all the expansion content already unlocked, including the most recent DLC, "Alien Hunters."
