UFC 189 news, fight rumors: Jose Aldo vs Connor McGregro given the go ahead

The main event for UFC 189 may be serious jeopardy with reports that Jose Aldo has suffered some broken ribs during a sparring session. If true, the fate of his scheduled match against Connor McGregor hangs in the balance as the UFC needs to get the proper medical clearance for the fight to push through.

The main event is pegged to rack in approximately about 1 million buys on pay-per-view but his injury puts all that on hold.

News about the current state of the UFC Featherweight Champion came out Tuesday. Aldo reportedly suffered the injury while in practice and preliminary medical examinations returned the champion incurring a suspect fractured rib.

If the injury is indeed true, Aldo could be likely out of action until October.

The Fight is a Go!
After a visit with his doctors, it was determined that Aldo did not suffer a fractured rib after all. Rather, it was only a bruised rib. And with that development, the Aldo vs. McGregor tiff at UFC 189 is a go.

"In light of recent reports regarding the status of UFC featherweight champion Jose Aldo, UFC has received official medical confirmation from several doctors that Aldo did not suffer a broken rib," the statement reads.

"Following a review of the scans, it has been determined that the champion suffered a bone bruise to his rib and cartilage injury during training.

Had Aldo not been fit to compete at UFC 189, there were already backup plans in place.

Chad Mendes would have taken the place of Jose Aldo had the champion failed to get the ample medical clearance. Mendes is the no. 1 featherweight contender.

With all that ironed out, UFC 189 will push ahead as scheduled.

Jose Aldo meets Connor McGregor at the MGM Grand Garden Arena on July 11 as the main card. Check out the trailer for the match below.
