The third season of "Tokyo Ghoul" is still highly anticipated by fans and casual viewers alike. Even though the companies behind it remain silent up until now, fans still take it as a sign that they are taking their time to correct what happened in the show's second season and bring it back on course with regards to its manga counterpart.

Fans were taken aback when the last season deviated from the manga version of the adventures of Ken Kaneki. It was even reported earlier that an online petition was started just so the fans could be heard that they would rather have the series rebooted rather than go against the original story. However, there are fans that agreed to the story shift and believed that the animation studio, Studio Pierrot, made some additional room to wiggle the storyline that they made for the next season.

On the other hand, the studio is also said to be trying to correct the course of the anime and that they are taking the time to properly do it this time around. It is said that there is enough material that can be used for the next season, and there is no reason to go rogue again.

With regards to the plot, it is suggested that the upcoming season will start with Kaneki having no recollection of his past, and he will be known as Haise Sasaki. It is also said that Arima will help Kaneki regain his memory by killing himself, making Kaneki the One-Eyed King, the king of the ghouls.

Another possible plot for season 3 is that Kaneki or Sasaki will lead the Quinx Squad, a special team of CCG (Commission of Counter Ghoul) investigators who were experimented on to have ghoul abilities. He and his team are tasked to look for dangerous ghouls, and eventually, he will remember that he is Ken Kaneki. This plot is said to follow the manga sequel, "Tokyo Ghoul: re," is set two years after the conclusion of the original series.

As of the moment, the premiere date of the third season of "Tokyo Ghoul" remains unknown since no official announcement has been made by Studio Pierrot or by Funimation, the North American distribution company for the anime.
